Description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Assistant Research Programmer based in the United States.

Join an innovative research environment dedicated to advancing the computational understanding of fundamental scientific questions.
As an Assistant Research Programmer, you will use Wolfram Language (Mathematica) to develop, explore, and visualize computational models that investigate complex phenomena.
Your work will contribute to research spanning biology, medicine, machine learning, mathematics, and the origins of life.
You will run computational experiments, explore parameter spaces, refine visualizations, and document code to support reproducible scientific discoveries.
For candidates with performance engineering expertise, the role also offers opportunities to optimize simulations using languages and technologies such as C, Rust, and OpenCL.
This position is ideal for a curious programmer who enjoys combining computational thinking, scientific exploration, and rigorous technical problem-solving.
You will help transform abstract research questions into practical computational experiments that can reveal new insights into the foundations of science.

Accountabilities

  • Develop computational models: Write clean, concise, and efficient Wolfram Language code to implement and explore computational models, including cellular automata, Turing machines, and other formal systems.
  • Conduct computational experiments: Run simulations, investigate different parameter spaces, and systematically test model behavior to help address fundamental scientific questions.
  • Create scientific visualizations: Design, refine, and optimize visual representations of computational experiments to make complex patterns and results easier to interpret.
  • Document and publish research code: Maintain clear, organized, and reusable code, documenting relevant experiments and preparing computational work for publication and further research.
  • Support interdisciplinary research: Contribute to investigations involving the origins of life, biological complexity, computational clinical trials, machine learning, and evolutionary AI.
  • Optimize simulation performance: Where relevant, develop and improve high-performance implementations using C, Rust, or OpenCL to support computationally intensive experiments.
  • Communicate research findings: Help articulate computational results clearly and concisely, making technical observations accessible to researchers and collaborators.
  • Contribute to scientific discovery: Apply computational reasoning and experimentation to explore foundational questions and identify meaningful patterns, limitations, and potential directions for further study.

Requirements

  • Wolfram Language expertise: Demonstrated fluency in Wolfram Language (Mathematica), including the ability to write clean, concise, efficient, and well-structured code for computational modeling and visualization.
  • Computational modeling knowledge: Familiarity with formal computational systems, such as cellular automata and Turing machines, and an interest in exploring their behavior through systematic experiments.
  • Scientific curiosity: A strong understanding of and enthusiasm for the computational approach to science, particularly the exploration of fundamental principles through simple computational models.
  • Analytical thinking: The ability to investigate complex problems, explore parameter spaces, interpret simulation results, and approach research questions methodically.
  • Communication skills: The ability to explain technical concepts, computational results, and scientific observations clearly and concisely.
  • High-performance programming (preferred): Experience writing optimized code in C, Rust, or OpenCL to accelerate simulations and handle computationally demanding workloads.
  • Interest in scientific disciplines (preferred): Enthusiasm for fields such as biology, medicine, machine learning, mathematics, artificial intelligence, and other areas where computational models can advance scientific understanding.
  • Independent and collaborative working style: The ability to work carefully and proactively, document technical work, and contribute to an exploratory research environment where questions may not have predetermined answers.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to contribute to research exploring fundamental questions across science, computation, and artificial intelligence.
  • Exposure to computational research spanning biology, medicine, machine learning, and the origins of life.
  • The opportunity to deepen expertise in Wolfram Language and computational modeling through practical research applications.
  • Potential to work on high-performance simulations using C, Rust, and OpenCL, depending on experience and project needs.
  • A research-focused environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, rigorous experimentation, and novel approaches to scientific problems.
  • Remote position based in the United States.
  • Compensation and additional benefits: Salary, healthcare coverage, retirement plans, paid time off, and other employment benefits were not specified in the available job description.
