Computational Physicist or Mathematician, Camera Geometry & SLAM (all genders) – The Geometry Wizard

Discussion

Description

Make smart glasses know exactly where you are and what you’re looking at.

Bring math and physics into production code, from camera geometry to SLAM.

We build award-winning smart glasses in Vienna: hardware, firmware, software, all under one roof. This is a role where your math ships: real ownership of geometry, calibration and localization on a wearable that is already in the field, end to end from camera calibration to SLAM.

Making Future Reality together - are you in?

Tasks

What You’ll Be Doing

Most of your time (roughly 70%) goes into building and shipping code; the rest into the math and physics behind it. Your work has two equally important sides.

Core geometry and accuracy

  • Camera geometry: Work on camera models, intrinsics and extrinsics, the rigid transformations between all cameras on the frame, and projection and reconstruction in 3D. Make the calibration more accurate and more robust, and quantify how good it is on real devices
  • User calibration: Model how each person’s eyes differ and fit those differences reliably from a few seconds of data
  • Accuracy algorithms: Estimate, measure and improve how close our results come to reality, and explain every remaining error
  • Matching real-world data: Compare model output with measurements, chase systematic errors to their source and fix them

Localization and spatial geometry

  • SLAM: Strengthen our visual-inertial localization with the front camera and IMU, evaluate it on real recordings, find out where accuracy and compute go, and improve the parts that need it to run well on the glasses. Our SLAM also knows where the wearer is looking, something most SLAM systems never have
  • Spatial geometry: Keep the coordinate chain from camera to eye to world consistent and accurate

Across both

  • Own your code: Maintain what you write and debug your own tests. A dedicated software engineer supports you with build infrastructure and CI/CD, so your energy stays on the algorithms
  • Collaborate: Work with the algorithms team, where many colleagues are physicists and mathematicians, and with our research team on measurement campaigns, calibration procedures and what to measure
  • Shape what’s next: Go deep on what already runs and find the next things worth building

Requirements

What You Bring to the Team

  • A PhD in physics, applied mathematics or a related field, or equivalent depth gained through industry work
  • Real mathematical fluency: Linear algebra, special functions and nonlinear optimization are home turf
  • Confidence in 3D geometry: Rotations and coordinate frames, projective geometry and camera models, plus the ability to set up a nonlinear least-squares problem, tell which parameters the data constrains and say how uncertain the result is
  • Production C and/or C++ from day one: Clean, tested, maintainable code that others can read and trust
  • Experience matching models to measured data, and the persistence to track down a small systematic error until it is explained
  • Curiosity about getting things exactly right
  • An eye tracking or vision science background is welcome but not required: we will teach you the domain
  • Fluent English; German is welcome

Nice to have

  • SLAM, visual odometry or multi-view geometry: Bundle adjustment, pose estimation, rotations and Lie groups, uncertainty propagation
  • Camera or camera-and-IMU calibration that you have done yourself
  • Constrained hardware: Making algorithms fit an embedded processor through profiling and numerical efficiency
  • AR, VR or head-mounted devices: registration and spatial calibration.
  • Optics: ray tracing, lens models or optical metrology.
  • Open-source work on relevant projects, and Rust, which we are phasing into our codebase

What’s extra?

  • Yearly public transport card (Vienna)
  • Workation within the EEA
  • Dog-friendly offices
  • "Inspire Days" – time to learn and recharge
  • A unique front-row seat to how a deep-tech hardware product gets built, from PCB to shipped device
  • International team where your impact is visible every day

To apply, please share

  • Your CV
  • A short note on a problem where you made a model match reality and links to your code (GitHub, GitLab or similar), especially anything involving camera geometry, calibration or SLAM.

As you know, due to the collective agreement (KV), we have to mention the official minimum salary, which is EUR 3,954 gross/month. But honestly, that’s just a baseline - we’re offering you a salary that truly reflects your skills and the value you bring. We’re excited to recognize your experience with a package well above the minimum and fully competitive in the market.

Ready to get the geometry exactly right? We can't wait to meet you.
