Description

Company Overview

AESC is a global leader in lithium‑ion and LFP battery technology, with a fast‑growing footprint across Japan, the UK, France, China, and the USA. It is now expanding in Spain with a €1‑billion gigafactory in Extremadura that will create up to 900 direct jobs in phase one. The Spanish facility is designed as the first net‑zero industrial park gigafactory in the country, in line with AESC’s mission to pioneer sustainable battery manufacturing.

Role Purpose

The Construction Safety Engineer will lead Health & Safety management during the construction and installation of AESC’s battery gigafactory in Navalmoral de la Mata. The role sits within the Global Infrastructure & Construction (GIC) team, reports to the Construction Manager and acts as the Owner’s H&S representative on site. The Engineer will make sure that contractors, suppliers and the Project Management Company (PMC) apply H&S requirements in line with Spanish legislation, project standards and AESC’s requirements. The work is on site, focused on execution, coordination and control. It involves close collaboration with the legally appointed Health & Safety Coordinator (CSS), the PMC and Corporate EHS.

Key Responsibilities

Project set-up

  • Translate AESC Corporate EHS policies and standards into project-specific H&S requirements for construction and installation activities.
  • Define H&S requirements for contractors and suppliers, together with GIC and Corporate EHS.
  • Align H&S planning with the PMC and the legally appointed Health & Safety Coordinator.
  • Act as the Owner’s H&S representative with the competent authorities when required.

Construction & installation

  • Lead on-site H&S supervision and coordination on behalf of GIC.
  • Review contractors’ H&S documentation (Construction H&S Plans, RAMS, JSAs) and monitor how it is applied in the field.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with applicable law, contractual requirements and the approved H&S documentation, including the coordination of business activities (CAE) and subcontracting control.
  • Coordinate daily with the Construction and Site Management teams so that H&S is built into execution planning.
  • Focus on the high-risk activities typical of a battery plant build: heavy lifting, electrical works and energisation, hot works, work at height, confined spaces, and interfaces between contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Carry out site inspections, audits and safety walks, and escalate deviations through GIC project channels.
  • Coordinate corrective actions with contractors, the PMC and the CSS, and follow them through to closure.
  • Support incident investigations and make sure corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
  • Report H&S performance, KPIs and critical risks to Project Management and Corporate EHS.
  • Escalate critical risks and recommend stopping work through project governance channels when there is serious or imminent danger.

Close-out & handover

  • Make sure that the construction H&S documentation and deliverables required for handover are complete and compliant.
  • Work with Corporate EHS to align with commissioning and operational H&S requirements.
  • Support final inspections, audits and regulatory reviews related to construction safety.
