Content Designer
Description
Starling is the UK’s first and leading digital bank on a mission to fix banking. Our vision is fast technology, fair service, and honest values – all at the tap of a phone, all the time. We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way.
We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.
We’re looking for a Content Designer to join our team and shape the experience our customers get in the Starling app. From notifications and navigation to FAQs and T&Cs, you’ll be responsible for writing and editing the messages we need to get across in a clear, concise, and consistent way. You’ll help drive behaviour at every stage of the customer lifecycle, maintain copy quality and consistency, and build a product that changes the way people bank – for good.
Hybrid working
We have a hybrid approach to working here at Starling – our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. For this role, we're asking that you attend the office a minimum of 1 day per week.
What you’ll be doing
- Crafting precise, accessible, and on-brand copy for the Starling app, online bank, and customer comms
- Getting under the skin of complicated concepts and finding ways to explain them clearly
- Working closely with product designers, managers, and user researchers to create intuitive and effective customer experiences
- Conducting research to inform and review copy decisions, and advocating for the best experience for all our users
- Exploring solutions that satisfy regulatory requirements and meet customer needs
- Spotting and solving content design problems, and maintaining consistency – including in all the nooks and crannies
- Developing guidance, templates, and frameworks to scale the impact of content design at Starling
Requirements
This might be for you if
- you’ve worked in UX writing or content design roles before, ideally for an app
- you have a knack for demystifying complex subjects, and writing copy that helps people find or do what they need
- you understand how to use data to drive decisions, and explain those decisions strategically
- you can explain why you chose one word over another, and change your mind when research or new information tells you to
- you’re comfortable asking as many questions as it takes to understand a brief or piece of feedback
- you have an eye for the small stuff – you notice the inconsistent button label, the unclear error message, the figure that doesn’t match
- you’re enthusiastic about collaborating with other teams, and curious about others’ points of view
How to apply
Please send us a cover letter as well as a CV – this helps us get a better understanding of who you are and the experience you’ll bring.
Please also attach or include a link to your portfolio, if you have one. If you don’t, please include an example in your cover letter of a piece of writing you’re proud of – tell us what the problem was, what you wrote, and what changed as a result.

You may be put off applying for a role because you don't tick every box. Forget that! While we can’t accommodate every flexible working request, we're always open to discussion. So, if you're excited about working with us, but aren’t sure if you're 100% there yet, get in touch anyway. We’re on a mission to radically reshape banking – and that starts with our brilliant team.
