Director, Chief of Staff
Description
Transform your career by becoming the Chief of Staff (CoS) to MongoDB’s Chief Information Officer, working directly with executives and the leadership team across MongoDB, including but not limited to within the IT organization.
The Role
As a senior leader in technology strategy and operations, the Chief of Staff acts as a key force multiplier for the CIO.
This role requires deep technical knowledge in enterprise systems, technology portfolio management, IT governance, systems analysis, and technology operations to support executive decision-making, enterprise technology investments, and organizational execution across the IT function.
You will run the operating rhythm of the Office of the CIO, lead the IT Program Management Office (ITPMO) that governs the IT portfolio and drive strategic program execution.
You possess the ability to blend strategic direction with hands-on tactical execution: shaping the CIO’s agenda, translating IT strategy into plans and measurable outcomes, and making sure decisions are made on time and followed through.
The role requires evaluating enterprise technology portfolios, identifying technical dependencies and implementation risks, assessing enterprise systems and technology investments, and translating complex technology requirements into governance, prioritization, and execution plans.
You will operate as a versatile, right-hand to help manage initiatives, demonstrating excellent program management and organizational skills, building the mechanisms that help IT scale.
The role also requires applying technical and analytical expertise to enterprise technology initiatives, evaluating systems-level dependencies and risks, and translating complex IT requirements into portfolio decisions and execution plans.
We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in Palo Alto, CA for our hybrid working model.
What You’ll Do
- CIO leverage and prioritization: Shape and manage the CIO’s agenda, ensuring time and focus go to the highest-value priorities. Act as a trusted advisor and thought partner, framing decisions with clear options and trade-offs.
- Operating rhythm: Design and run the IT operating cadence, including IT leadership team meetings, QBRs, planning cycles, offsites, and executive and board readouts. Build workback plans, track commitments, and surface risks early.
- Strategy and planning: Partner with CIO Leadership team to translate IT strategy into annual and quarterly objectives, OKRs, and plans, and track progress against them.
- Strategy and planning: Partner with IT leaders to evaluate strategic technology initiatives involving enterprise applications, data platforms, AI capabilities, cloud technologies, cybersecurity programs, and enterprise architecture priorities.
- Influence: Collaborate, influence and align with CIO Leadership, peers, and other key stakeholders as needed towards the objectives that we are driving in terms of IT strategy. You are comfortable and possess the ability to push back, question assumptions and influence direction without authority.
- ITPMO and portfolio governance: Lead the ITPMO and maintain a single view of the IT portfolio: status, risks, dependencies, value, and alignment to company priorities. You will lead and govern a portfolio consisting of enterprise applications, SaaS platforms, cloud services, infrastructure modernization initiatives, data and analytics platforms, cybersecurity programs, enterprise integrations, AI-enabled capabilities, and digital transformation initiatives. Establish governance processes to evaluate implementation complexity, technical dependencies, resource requirements, architecture impacts, operational readiness, and business value.
- Portfolio analysis and governance: Assess cross-functional IT initiatives, including dependencies, implementation risks, resource constraints, and alignment to enterprise technology priorities, to support portfolio prioritization and investment decisions. Analyze enterprise technology initiatives involving business applications, cloud platforms, enterprise integrations, identity and access management systems, cybersecurity controls, analytics environments, and AI adoption programs. Apply knowledge of enterprise systems, systems analysis, IT governance, and technology lifecycle management to assess implementation risks, technical interdependencies, architecture considerations, and operational impacts.
- Technology strategy and enterprise systems analysis: Evaluate enterprise technology roadmaps, systems integration requirements, enterprise architecture dependencies, data and AI initiatives, and digital transformation programs. Apply expertise in enterprise systems, technology governance frameworks, systems analysis methodologies, and IT operations to support technology investment decisions and long-term planning.
- Strategic program execution: Oversee CIO-sponsored, cross-pillar programs and special projects. Oversee enterprise technology transformation initiatives, including cloud migrations, enterprise application deployments, process automation efforts, enterprise data initiatives, AI adoption programs, and systems integration projects. Partner with DRIs to define, resource, and deliver them, and to remove blockers and hold owners accountable.
- Financial and resource partnership: Partner with Finance and IT leaders on budget, forecasting, headcount, and vendor and SaaS spend. Evaluate technology investment proposals, cloud consumption forecasts, infrastructure expenditures, software licensing strategies, SaaS contracts, and vendor capabilities to support prioritization and investment decisions. Assess expected business value, implementation complexity, ongoing operating costs, technical risks, and resource requirements associated with major technology investments.
- People priorities and HR partnership: Partner with the HR Business Leader on organizational priorities, leadership transitions, and organizational change initiatives. Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with sound judgement.
- Executive communications: Draft and quality-check CIO and leadership communications, including board materials, all-hands content, and IT-wide updates. Develop executive-level communications and board materials that synthesize complex technology topics including enterprise application strategy, technology portfolio performance, cybersecurity initiatives, cloud transformation, AI adoption, and digital modernization efforts into actionable recommendations.
- Cross-functional alignment: Partner with Chiefs of Staff and leaders across the executive team. Represent the CIO where appropriate and manage through influence.
- Team leadership: Develop and lead the PMO team, strengthening project management capabilities, operational excellence, and portfolio management. Establish consistent standards, drive accountability, and foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and effective execution across IT.
- Continuous improvement: Define delivery standards and ways of working, and use data and AI-enabled tools to make governance, reporting, and executive support faster and more scalable. Leverage enterprise systems expertise, workflow automation technologies, analytics platforms, AI-enabled solutions, and technology management best practices to continuously improve governance, reporting, portfolio management, and operational effectiveness.
What You’ll Bring
- 10+ years of experience in enterprise IT strategy, technology portfolio management, IT program management, or technology operations, ideally within a high-growth technology company.
- Experience managing and governing complex enterprise technology portfolios involving enterprise applications, cloud platforms, infrastructure services, cybersecurity programs, systems integrations, data and analytics environments, AI-enabled technologies, and digital transformation initiatives. Demonstrated ability to evaluate enterprise systems, architecture dependencies, implementation risks, technical tradeoffs, and operational impacts across interconnected technology environments.
- Experience evaluating program dependencies, implementation risks, and resource constraints to inform prioritization and execution.
- Proven ability to design and run governance frameworks, operating cadences, and decision processes, and to manage complex, cross-functional programs end to end.
- Financial acumen: comfort with budgets, forecasting, and investment prioritization.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication, including board-ready materials that turn complex information into clear recommendations.
- Strong analytical and systems-thinking skills; you use data to guide trade-offs and design for scale.
- High EQ, low ego, and sound judgment. You build trust quickly and handle confidential information with discretion.
- AI-fluent: you apply AI and automation in your own work and in how your teams operate.
- Demonstrated experience governing technology portfolios that include areas such as enterprise applications, infrastructure, security, SaaS, or related IT services and delivery. Familiarity with IT delivery and technology portfolios, agile practices, and change management is beneficial.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or a closely related technical field that provides specialized preparation in enterprise systems, systems analysis, technology architecture, cloud technologies, software and platform lifecycles, enterprise integrations, information management, cybersecurity, data systems, and IT governance.
- Flexible schedule; occasional domestic or international travel. Bachelor’s degree required; MBA a plus.
What Success Looks Like
- The CIO’s time and focus are aligned to the highest-value priorities, and decisions happen on schedule.
- IT’s strategic initiatives are governed through one transparent portfolio, with clear status, risks, and ownership.
- IT investments align to company objectives and OKRs, with improved cost transparency and delivery predictability.
- The ITPMO is recognized across the company for execution excellence.
What This Is Not
This is not a traditional Chief of Staff or project management role. It is a senior technology strategy and operations leadership position that requires deep technical expertise, the ability to assess enterprise IT roadmaps, requirements, investments, and complex technology initiatives, and the leadership to drive execution across the organization. The role translates the CIO’s strategic vision into actionable priorities, establishes the technical governance frameworks and operating processes needed to scale MongoDB’s IT organization, and leads and develops the Technical Program Management Office (TPMO), driving program governance, portfolio execution, and cross-functional alignment across strategic IT initiatives.
