Hardware Development Engineer I, Relay Fleet & Yard Devices

Posted
Discussion

Description

Cargo theft and fraud cost our business hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and most of it happens to trailers with no device smart enough to notice. You will design the electronics that give trailers and yards the senses to catch it, on a hardware team inside a fleet tracking and telemetry organization that carries products from the lab bench to the road. Across the full hardware lifecycle (schematic and PCB design, prototype bring-up, test, and qualification), you will build edge-compute gateways, tamper-resistant GPS, smart locks that act as a virtual seal, tire-pressure and door sensors, on-trailer cameras with collision radar, and automated yard gates that read plates and raise barriers. This matters now because we are expanding into new regions and moving intelligence onto the device, where a warning can fire in seconds and prevent a loss.

Key job responsibilities
- Design, develop, and validate hardware — PCBs/PCBAs, high-speed digital and RF circuitry, subsystems, and custom test fixtures.
- Bring up, test, troubleshoot, and optimize hardware prototypes in a lab environment.
- Develop control and signaling algorithms that interface directly with hardware (sensors, microcontrollers, custom silicon).
- Collaborate cross-functionally (mechanical, thermal, power, RF, software, manufacturing) to gather requirements, define hardware architectures, and prepare for integration.
- Identify hardware design risks and drive mitigations.
- Perform hardware checkout, acceptance testing, and verification against established requirements and procedures.
- Support engineering-change and configuration control (schematics, BOMs, drawings, test procedures, released documentation).
- Investigate hardware failures and support root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Build automated test systems, test fixtures, and data-collection/analysis pipelines to enable data-driven performance insights.
- Produce clear technical documentation (schematics, test procedures, engineering drawings, design docs).

About the team
Our team is focused on building reliable, high-quality hardware that delights customers. We value collaboration, hands-on problem solving, and continuous learning. You will work closely with engineers across multiple disciplines, contributing to products that operate at Amazon's scale. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every team member's perspective strengthens the work we do together.
