About Tutor

We believe robots are the biggest lever we have to making the physical world a better, more affordable place. But robots are a rounding error in our society: nearly nine out of ten American factories and warehouses don’t even have a single robot, and robots have yet to make their way into our homes or places of business.

Tutor Intelligence is changing that.

Tutor is a robotics research and deployment company, building generally capable robot hardware and artificial intelligence to enable robots to go where no robots have gone before. Sonny is a semi-humanoid robot with frontier dexterity approaching the human form. Cassie does back-breaking work, moving boxes, pallets, and bulk goods for businesses from family-owned manufacturers to some of the largest brands in the world. Tutor robots are manufactured at scale and operate as a network, combining the whole fleet’s learned experience to train ever more capable robot artificial intelligence.

Founded at MIT and headquartered in Watertown, MA, our team is full stack: we design and manufacture robot hardware, train our own models, work directly with the smallest and largest end-customers, and maintain our fleet across the United States. We’re a team of researchers, engineers, technicians, operators, and sellers who love building things and solving hard problems.

Our mission is grand: robots everywhere, for the common good, raising the standard of living across North America, and then the world.

The Role

Our Watertown factory is ramping Cassie from 30 to 80+ robots a month and launching Sonny V2 production in 2027. We're hiring our first Head of Quality to build the function from the ground up.

You'll report to our CTO as a peer to the Heads of Manufacturing and Supply Chain, with the authority to hold any shipment that isn't right.

This is a builder role. There's no incoming inspection or formal quality system yet. You'll lead root cause yourself at first, then grow a small team around you.

What You'll Own

  • Production quality: incoming, in-process and final quality gates, first-pass yield, and ship-hold authority
  • Field reliability: RMA, failure analysis, FRACAS and the weekly MRB, with MTBF targets set alongside Engineering
  • Supplier quality: audits, PPAP and SCARs across our US and Asia supply base, plus qualifying second sources
  • Quality system: document control, CAPA, product safety certifications (UL/CSA/CE) and ISO 9001 readiness
  • Data and tools: quality data on our MES (ION) and internal platform (Atlas) that every team trusts
  • Your team: hire a Quality & Reliability Engineer, US and Asia supplier quality engineers, and a quality systems specialist

Your First Year

  • Zero escapes through the Cassie ramp to 80+ robots a month
  • A launch quality plan ready for Sonny V2's ramp to 18 robots a day
  • Every field failure traced to a root cause and a verified fix
  • Second-source suppliers qualified for drives, PCBAs, robot arms and castings

What You Bring

  • BS or higher in engineering
  • 8+ years in hardware quality, including 3+ leading quality engineers
  • You've built a quality function or QMS where none existed
  • You've personally led 8D/RCA to closure on electromechanical hardware
  • Supplier quality at scale, including suppliers in Asia
  • A background in robotics, EV/battery/automotive, or capital equipment
  • The judgment to stop a shipment, and the relationships to keep teams moving
  • You manage by data. Bonus if you've built tools other people use.

Nice to Have

  • Lithium battery safety and transport (UN 38.3)
  • Product safety certification experience (UL/CSA/CE)
  • ASQ CQE/CRE or Six Sigma Black Belt
  • Mandarin, or direct work with Chinese suppliers
  • MES/PLM experience (ION, Arena or similar)

Why Tutor?

Whether you’re designing robots, closing deals, running deployments, or creating the processes that help us scale, your work doesn’t sit on a shelf. It shows up on real production floors, making physical work safer and more affordable.

Our team of 160+ is driven by curiosity and a genuine love of building. Everyone here takes real ownership, learns fast, and holds a high bar while having each other’s backs. If you love hard problems and creating things that didn’t exist before, you’ll fit right in.
