Lead Embedded & Controls Engineer

Description

Amazon Web Services is seeking a Sr. Embedded & Digital Control Engineer to lead the DSP/FPGA control architecture and embedded implementation strategy for the SST, coordinating hierarchical control loops and HW/SW co-design.

As a Sr. Embedded & Digital Control Engineer you will define the DSP/FPGA hierarchical control architecture — fast inner loops through supervisory control — where the structure must be established, not inherited. You will own real-time implementation constraints across power, FPGA and embedded layers and integrate control onto the target platform at system scale. You will drive stability/transient/dynamic-load validation and fault-state integration, and mentor control and firmware engineers across the program.

Key job responsibilities
Control architecture:
- Define DSP/FPGA architecture for hierarchical converter control.
- Coordinate fast inner loops, supervisory control and system-level control functions.
- Define control interfaces to power stages, sensors, protection and communications.

HW/SW co-design:
- Coordinate power-electronics, FPGA and embedded-software interfaces.
- Ensure real-time implementation constraints are reflected in control architecture.
- Lead integration of control algorithms into the target hardware platform.

System validation:
- Support stability, transient-response and dynamic-load validation.
- Coordinate control tuning and troubleshooting with Power Electronics and Simulation.
- Support fault-state and protection integration.

SST System Alignment:
- Lead the system-aligned state machine and system behavior implementation, including OFF, Standby, Precharged, ON, Fault and Warning states.
- Coordinate VRT/FRT, MVAC load acceptance/rejection, ESS power sharing, LVDC regulation, redundancy and recovery behavior.
- Define telemetry and control interfaces required for Modbus TCP/IP and the broader data-center operational interface.

A day in the life
In this role, you'll focus on architecting the digital signal processing and FPGA control systems that manage power conversion and distribution across our data centers. You'll start your day reviewing control performance data and collaborating with power electronics and firmware teams to refine real-time implementations. You might spend time defining control interfaces between sensors, protection systems, and communications protocols, then shift to validating system behavior under dynamic load conditions.

You'll also mentor other control and firmware engineers, sharing your expertise in hierarchical control design and helping them navigate implementation challenges. Your work spans from theoretical control architecture decisions to hands-on troubleshooting of transient responses and fault-state behaviors on actual hardware platforms.

About the team
We are the team that keeps AWS infrastructure running reliably across the globe. Our mission is to design, plan, deliver, and operate the systems that power every AWS data center—managing thousands of variables across power, cooling, networking, and storage to ensure our customers have continuous access to the services they depend on.
