Lead Mechanical Engineer

Description
Amazon Web Services is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical architecture of the 5-10 MW SST, including enclosure/rack architecture, interfaces, IP protection, vibration and seismic qualification.
As a Lead Mechanical Engineer you will define enclosure/rack architecture, interfaces, IP rating and serviceability for the 5–10 MW system from an open requirement space. You will own structural, thermal, environmental (vibration/seismic) and manufacturability constraints at system scale, plus escalations. You will chair mechanical reviews, coordinate suppliers/manufacturing, mentor designers, and align interfaces with thermal, electrical and MV/HV.
About AIS
AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Mechanical architecture:
- Define the mechanical architecture for the 5–10 MW system and its major assemblies.
- Develop rack/enclosure concepts compatible with high-power electronics and liquid cooling.
- Define mechanical interfaces with power, PCB, magnetics, cooling and electrical integration.
Environmental requirements:
- Address IP-rating requirements.
- Define and assess vibration and seismic qualification requirements.
- Consider serviceability, accessibility and maintainability in the mechanical design.
Design leadership:
- Lead mechanical design reviews.
- Coordinate suppliers and manufacturing for prototype and production parts.
- Support mechanical qualification, prototype builds and system integration.
SST System Alignment"
- Design against the system specification environmental envelope where applicable: NEMA 3R outdoor rating, -30°C to 40°C operating range, C5 corrosion class, 95% RH non-condensing, ≤1000 m site elevation and defined transport/seismic loads.
- Account for the system physical envelope guidance and serviceability/transport constraints while developing the 5–10 MW platform.
A day in the life
As a Lead Mechanical Engineer, you'll focus on developing mechanical architecture for our 5-10 MW power systems, working with cutting-edge liquid cooling and high-power electronics integration. Your day might include chairing mechanical design reviews where you evaluate structural and thermal concepts, coordinating with suppliers on prototype development, or mentoring junior designers through complex design challenges. You'll balance strategic architecture decisions with hands-on problem-solving—defining how components interface with electrical, thermal, and manufacturing teams. You'll also assess environmental requirements like vibration and seismic qualification, ensuring our systems operate reliably across diverse global locations from coastal to high-altitude environments.
About the team
We are AWS Infrastructure Services—the team that keeps the cloud running for millions of customers worldwide. We design, plan, deliver, and operate all AWS global infrastructure, managing thousands of variables across the supply chain to ensure continuous innovation and reliability. Our team is composed of collaborative engineers who thrive in solving complex, interconnected problems. We're building the next generation of power systems, and we're looking for someone who shares our commitment to safety, scalability, and operational excellence. You'll work alongside thermal engineers, electrical specialists, and manufacturing partners, contributing to a shared vision of more efficient, reliable infrastructure. Our customers depend on us, and we depend on talented people like you to help shape the future of cloud infrastructure.
Why AWS?
