Programmer Intern (DevOps)
Description
The DevOps Programmer Intern is a part‑time, hands‑on role bridging the gap between software development and IT infrastructure. Candidates must be current Computer Science majors with a strong interest in systems programming and automation. Under the close mentorship of Senior Infrastructure team members, the intern contributes code to automate manual IT processes, including server provisioning, storage management, and network configuration. This role focuses on writing C# .NET applications, PowerShell scripts, and SQL procedures that interact with enterprise APIs (Windows, VMware, Cisco, and NetApp). The internship emphasizes modern Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices, version control, and CI/CD pipelines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This job description is not intended, nor should it be construed, to be an all-inclusive list of responsibilities, duties, skills, or working conditions associated with the job. It is intended to be a general description of the essential duties and requirements common to positions of this type and may be subject to change. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
- Automation Development (C# & .NET): Develop console applications, background services (Worker Services), and APIs using C#/.NET to interface with infrastructure systems. Write software that "glues" together disparate systems (e.g., creating a C# tool that triggers a VMware task based on a helpdesk ticket).
- Scripting & Configuration Management (PowerShell): Write, refactor, and optimize PowerShell scripts to replace manual system administration tasks. Translate manual SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) into executable code.
- Database & Logging (SQL): Design and maintain SQL Server tables used for infrastructure inventory, audit logs, and configuration state. Write efficient queries and stored procedures to report on system health and capacity data.
- API Integration: Learn to consume RESTful APIs to programmatically control hardware (Servers, Storage Arrays, Network Switches). Parse JSON/XML payloads to extract system data for reporting.
- Quality & Testing: Implement unit tests for C# code and Pester tests for PowerShell scripts to ensure safety before deployment. Participate in code reviews and learn to write secure, efficient code that runs on production servers.
- Documentation & Git Hygiene: Maintain strictly version-controlled repositories using Git (branching, pull requests, merge conflicts). Document code functionality and update internal wikis regarding automation workflows. Update READMEs, how‑to notes, and “getting started” guides for newcomers.
- Developer Hygiene: Keep work items up to date; write clear commit messages and PR descriptions; demo completed work.
- Security & Privacy Awareness: Follow secure coding basics and data‑handling guidelines under supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Current Computer Science major (or closely related computing major like Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering) actively enrolled; rising sophomore or above preferred.
- Experience: Coursework or personal projects demonstrating backend logic and scripting abilities.
- Programming Fundamentals: Entry-level proficiency in C#/Java and SQL.
- Scripting: Exposure to PowerShell or Bash scripting is highly preferred.
- Systems Knowledge: Basic understanding of what an Operating System is (Windows/Linux) and basic networking concepts (IP addresses, DNS, Ping).
- API Basics: Theoretical understanding of how REST APIs work (GET/POST requests).
- Collaboration: Willingness to ask questions when "stuck" and comfortable working with non-programmers (System Administrators).
- Work Style: Detail‑oriented and disciplined, code errors in this role can affect servers, so caution and testing are required.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Read Learning Git and associated quizzes
- Read C# 12 in a Nutshell and complete associated quizzes
- Read T-SQL Fundamentals and complete associated quizzes
- Read Fundamentals of DevOps and Software Delivery and associated quizzes
- Read Mastering PowerShell Scripting and associated quizzes
- Read Fluent Python and complete associated quizzes
