Description

Key Responsibilities

New hire onboarding and safety training

• Lead new hire safety orientation: plant rules, PPE, emergency action and evacuation, hazard communication, forklift and pedestrian traffic, and reporting injuries and near misses.

• Deliver lockout/tagout (LOTO) training for authorized and affected employees and verify competency before anyone performs LOTO.

• Coordinate equipment-specific training with supervisors and trainers for retort, dryer, press, and packaging equipment; sign off on qualification before independent work.

• Train associates on combustible dust, housekeeping, and hot-product/thermal event hazards specific to briquette manufacturing.

• Maintain training records and a training matrix showing who is trained, on what, and when refreshers are due; schedule annual LOTO and other required refreshers.

• Support safety observations, incident and near miss investigations, and corrective action follow-up.

Environmental Monitoring

• Inspect and sample stormwater outfalls and on-site ponds on the schedule required by the facility's stormwater permit and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).

• Record visual observations, sample results, rainfall events, and pond levels and conditions.

• Coordinate sample collection and shipment with the outside lab; track results against permit benchmarks.

• Identify and escalate exceedances, spills, or unusual conditions to the Operations Manager immediately, and track corrective actions to closure.

• Help keep the SWPPP, site map, and inspection forms current as the site changes.

Records and Audit Readiness

• Own the filing system for all safety training and environmental records, organized so any document can be produced quickly during an audit or agency inspection.

• Build and maintain logs and trackers (Excel or similar) for training status, inspections, sampling, and corrective actions.

• Prepare data summaries and required reports for management and regulatory submittals by their due dates.

• Run periodic self-audits of records and correct gaps before they become findings.

Collaboration and Site Support

• Partner daily with the Manufacturing Lead on safe work practices, training needs, and floor-level safety issues.

• Support trucking and raw material deliveries: driver check-in and site safety rules, safe unloading practices, traffic flow, and spill prevention at receiving areas.

• Participate in daily leadership meetings and report safety and environmental status.

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.

• 2+ years in a manufacturing environment; lead, trainer, or safety committee experience preferred.

• Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards, especially lockout/tagout, PPE, hazard communication, and powered industrial trucks.

• Strong recordkeeping habits and attention to detail; documentation is complete, accurate, and on time.

• Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; comfortable building simple trackers and summarizing data.

• Able to teach adults clearly and hold people accountable to safety rules.

• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate or Bachelor's Degree in occupational safety, environmental science, or a related field.

• Data or administrative background (data entry, reporting, compliance records).

• Experience with stormwater sampling, SWPPP inspections, or NPDES permit compliance.

• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 General Industry; CPR/First Aid or willingness to obtain.

• Familiarity with combustible dust (NFPA 652/654) hazards.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Walk the full site, including outfalls and ponds, in all weather conditions.

• Stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 lb.

• Work in hot, dusty, and noisy production areas while wearing required PPE.

• Occasional flexibility outside of day shift to train off shift associates or respond to rain events and incidents.
