About the Role

As a Senior Platform Engineer focused on Developer Experience, you'll own the path from a developer's laptop to production: CI, test infrastructure, deploy trains, and staging. You'll measure where engineers lose time, cut merge-to-production time, and make flaky tests rare.

Product engineers are your customers. You'll work with our platform engineering leader and our QA team, and your work will give time back to every engineer at Rootly. As Rootly grows and AI speeds up development, more pull requests flow through the same pipeline every month, so the impact of this role compounds.

What You'll Do

  • Instrument the delivery pipeline end to end so we know where time goes between merge and production.
  • Cut merge-to-production lead time and keep it down as the team and codebase grow.
  • Find and fix flaky tests at the source, and build tooling that catches new flakiness early.
  • Own our CI pipelines and deploy trains, including smoke gates and rollback.
  • Untangle staging so teams stop waiting on each other to test changes.
  • Improve local development and onboarding so new engineers ship in their first week.
  • Track developer experience numbers like build time, deploy frequency, and change failure rate, and share progress openly.

What You'll Need

We care about impact, ownership, and technical judgement. Degrees and big-name logos are not required. What matters is your ability to execute, influence, and teach.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years building software in production, with significant time on modern CI/CD (such as Buildkite, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, or Argo CD), build systems, or developer tooling.
  • Hands-on experience running and speeding up CI pipelines for a large codebase.
  • Experience diagnosing and fixing test flakiness and test infrastructure problems.
  • A developer experience mindset: you treat other engineers as customers and measure whether your tools help them.
  • Comfortable working in a large Rails monolith as well as in infrastructure.
  • You write production-grade software, and you explain tradeoffs clearly to product teams and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience running CI systems at scale, and with deploy trains or merge queues.
  • Experience with test parallelization and test selection for Ruby or RSpec suites.
  • Experience building ephemeral or shared staging environments.
  • Experience with Ruby and Go.

What Success Looks Like

By 6 to 12 months you will have:

  • Instrumented the pipeline end to end, with a shared dashboard for build time, lead time, deploy frequency, and change failure rate.
  • Meaningfully cut merge-to-production lead time, and kept it there as headcount and pull request volume grew.
  • Made flaky tests rare, with tooling that flags new flakiness before it spreads.
  • Removed staging as a bottleneck, so teams test changes without waiting on each other.
  • Got new engineers shipping to production in their first week.

Our Tech Stack

  • Backend: Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, Redis, Sidekiq, AWS Lambda, ECS, Kafka, DynamoDB
  • Frontend: Turbo, Stimulus, ViewComponents
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform (IaC), Datadog
