Senior Software Engineer - Digital Platform and AWS

Description

Our Commitment to You

At Consumer Cellular, recruiting is human. Every application is reviewed by a real member of our Talent Acquisition team because we believe the people behind the résumé matter just as much as what's on it.

All official communication from Consumer Cellular will come from a @consumercellular.com email address or through our verified texting platform, which will only be used to schedule interviews. We will never ask for personal and financial information during the recruiting process. If you receive outreach that doesn't match these criteria, please do not engage and feel free to verify directly at [email protected].

Job Summary
Consumer Cellular is building a new cloud-native platform on Amazon Web Services, and we are hiring Senior Software Engineers to build the services that run on it.

This is a hands-on product engineering role. You will design and ship the APIs and event-driven services behind our customer-facing digital experiences- account management, activation, billing, and self-service - using a serverless-first architecture on AWS. You will work in Python and TypeScript, make substantive data modeling decisions across several purpose-built data stores, and own your services in production.

Two things make this a compelling time to join. The platform is new, so the patterns are not all set yet and your design decisions will outlive your first year. And we are migrating a large group of experienced colleagues onto it, so Senior Engineers here have real influence on how the whole organization builds- not only on their own backlog.

We serve millions of customers who depend on us for something that matters staying connected to the people they care about. Our customer base skews older than the industry average, which makes clarity, reliability, and accessibility engineering requirements rather than afterthoughts. If you like the idea of your work being judged by whether it works for people who are not power users, you will fit in well here.

You will need to reside within 50 miles of our Corporate Headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ as this role has the option of hybrid or onsite.

Responsibilities

• Design and build production services. Develop serverless APIs and event-driven workflows using AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway, and Amazon EventBridge, written in Python and Node/TypeScript.

• Make and data modeling decisions. We use several data stores deliberately: Amazon DynamoDB, Aurora DSQL, Amazon DocumentDB, and Amazon S3. You will select between them based on access patterns, and you will be expected to explain why.

• Own what you ship. Instrument your services, build the dashboards and alarms, author the runbooks, and participate in an on-call rotation for the services your team owns.

• Build for failure. Asynchronous systems fail in ways request/response systems do not. You will design for retries, idempotency, duplicate delivery, and partial failure as a matter of course.

• Work in a modern delivery pipeline. GitHub and GitHub Actions, OIDC-federated deployments, infrastructure as code, Ansible for configuration management, and service-to-service connectivity via Amazon VPC Lattice.

• Raise the bar through review. Provide thorough, constructive, and useful code and design review. A meaningful share of your impact in this role shows up in other people’s work.

• Support colleague migration. Pair with engineers moving onto the platform from our existing stack, and help turn what you learn into documentation and reusable patterns. We have built a structured enablement program, and Senior Engineers are central to it.

• Contribute to platform standards. Logging conventions, error handling, IAM patterns, repository structure, and data store selection guidance.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)

Required

• Five or more years building and operating backend services in production. We care about depth of ownership rather than the number itself; if you have shipped and supported real systems that people depended on, tell us about it.

• Strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript/Node, and willingness to work in both. Most of our engineers arrive strong in one.

• Hands-on AWS experience, including a working understanding of IAM, networking fundamentals, and at least one managed AWS data service.

• Experience designing REST APIs and integrating distributed systems.

• Practical experience with relational data modeling and SQL, including how schema choices affect performance.

• Comfort with Git-based workflows and CI/CD, and an established habit of automated testing.

• Demonstrated debugging skill in distributed systems — you can work a problem from logs, metrics, and traces rather than by guessing.

• Clear written communication. Design documents, decision records, and review comments are a substantial part of this job.

Strongly Preferred

• Production serverless experience — AWS Lambda or equivalent, including the operational realities that come with it: cold starts, concurrency limits, timeouts, and execution-role scoping.

• Production event-driven architecture experience — EventBridge, Kafka, SNS/SQS, or similar, including idempotency and dead-letter handling.

• NoSQL data modeling, particularly DynamoDB single-table design and access-pattern-first modeling.

• Migration or modernization experience, moving workloads from traditional infrastructure to cloud-native architectures.

• Infrastructure as code (CloudFormation, CDK, SAM, or Ansible)

• Observability practice: structured logging, distributed tracing, alarm design, and service level objectives.

• Cost-aware engineering — you consider what a design costs to run, not only whether it works.

Preferred

• Amazon Bedrock, Bedrock AgentCore, LiteLLM, or comparable LLM application and agent development experience, including evaluation and guardrails.

• Aurora DSQL, Amazon DocumentDB, or other distributed SQL / document database experience.

• Amazon VPC Lattice or service mesh experience.

• Telecommunications, MVNO, billing, or subscription-commerce domain background.

• Accessibility engineering experience (WCAG).

• AWS certification (Developer – Associate, Solutions Architect – Associate, or AI Practitioner). Useful signal, but never a substitute for shipped work.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. We evaluate demonstrated ability over credentials.

A note on the lists above: these describe a strong candidate, not a checklist. Research consistently shows that some people apply only when they meet every listed requirement while others apply at sixty percent. If you meet the required section and are genuinely interested, please apply- we would rather assess you than lose you to a bullet point.

How We Work

• Serverless-first by default, with deliberate exceptions rather than accidental ones.

• Small teams that own their services end to end, including on-call.

• Design review before significant build; code review on everything.

• Written decisions. If it mattered, it is written down.

• Protected time for learning- one dedicated day per week for engineers ramping on the platform, supported by a real enablement program rather than a wiki page and good intentions.

• Sandbox AWS accounts for every engineer, because this cannot be learned without permission to deploy.

We are candid about the state of things: the platform is new, some patterns are still being set, and there is legacy to migrate. That is the work. If you want a finished system to maintain, this is not it. If you want to help shape one, it is.

What Success Looks Like

• First 90 days: shipped several changes to production, comfortable in the delivery pipeline, on-call with a backstop, and contributed to at least one design discussion.

• Six months: owning a service or significant surface area, making independent design decisions, and mentoring at least one engineer migrating onto the platform.

• Twelve months: setting patterns that others follow, trusted on ambiguous problems, with visible influence on platform standards.
