Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure AI
Description
About Airwallex
Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.
We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,700 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.
How you'll make impact
Infrastructure AI is building the systems that will change how infrastructure work gets done at Airwallex. You'll design and operate goal-oriented AI agents that automate SRE, DevOps, and DBA workflows across our global infrastructure.
Build goal-oriented infrastructure AI agents on Airwallex’s internal agent platform to automate SRE, DevOps, and DBA workflows, including incident investigation and remediation, infrastructure provisioning, deployment orchestration, database operations, and capacity management.
Design reliable agent architectures with planning, reasoning, tool use, error recovery, safety guardrails, auditability, and human-in-the-loop escalation for systems that interact with production infrastructure.
Integrate agents with Kubernetes, Terraform, cloud APIs across AWS, GCP, and Aliyun, monitoring and observability platforms, databases, and CI/CD pipelines through well-designed tool interfaces.
Define and improve evaluation frameworks for agent effectiveness, including task completion, accuracy, time to resolution, and escalation rates.
Partner with SRE, DevOps, and platform engineering teams to identify high-value workflows for automation and translate operational pain points into effective agent capabilities.
Help shape Airwallex’s technical vision for AI-driven infrastructure operations by bringing forward new ideas in agent architecture, reliability, safety, and evaluation.
You'll work from our Seattle office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
What we're looking for
Essentials
5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong proficiency in a backend language such as Python, Go, Java, or Kotlin.
Practical experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Aliyun; container orchestration with Kubernetes; infrastructure as code with Terraform; and CI/CD systems.
Strong system design skills, with the ability to architect reliable, safe, and scalable systems that interact with production infrastructure.
Experience building agentic AI systems that autonomously plan, reason, and execute multi-step tasks using large language models, including agent-loop design, tool-use orchestration, and agent state or memory.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of working effectively across cross-functional teams in a global environment.
Preferred
Experience with agent orchestration frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, or custom agent frameworks, and LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic.
Experience with observability and monitoring systems such as Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, or the ELK stack.
Experience with database administration or automation, including schema migrations, query optimisation, and backup and recovery.
Understanding of SRE practices, including incident response, runbooks, postmortems, and SLOs/SLIs.
A forward-thinking perspective on agent reliability, safety, evaluation, and the path toward increasingly autonomous infrastructure systems.
You'll thrive here if
You're comfortable owning the roadmap yourself.
You're comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and moving quickly anyway.
You're comfortable with ambiguity. Give you a problem, not a prescription, and you'll run with it.
You hold yourself to a high standard even when no one is watching. Quality and accountability aren't external expectations, they're internal ones.
You enjoy working closely with people across multiple countries and time zones as part of one connected, global team, including flexing your hours occasionally to make that connection work.
Learn more about your team
The Infrastructure & Productivity team at Airwallex builds the technical foundation that allows our global engineering organization to scale. Our customers are our fellow engineers, and our mission is to make their daily work faster, safer, and more effective by managing the core platforms everyone relies on, from Kubernetes and Kafka to CI/CD pipelines and observability systems. The real challenge lies in keeping these global systems highly reliable and secure while simultaneously optimizing cloud costs, automating manual support, and driving standardization without slowing down product delivery. We operate under the philosophy that best practices should be the path of least resistance, not a forced mandate. If you're a systems thinker who wants to work close to the core of the company and directly shape how we build, deploy, and scale software worldwide, this is where that work happens.
