What You'll Do

Create detailed layouts, structural plans, and material specifications based on customer needs and project requirements.
Serve as Builders FirstSource's technical representative throughout the design, purchasing, and construction process.
Analyze project requirements and perform simple to complex structural evaluations to ensure optimal design solutions.
Review plans and layouts with customers, providing expert recommendations and technical guidance.
Interpret customer concept drawings and transform them into accurate, buildable construction designs.
Select appropriate materials and generate material take-offs and product lists.
Coordinate directly with engineers, architects, contractors, and customers to resolve design challenges and project discrepancies.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable building codes, engineering requirements, and municipal regulations.
Proactively identify issues and develop practical solutions while balancing cost, schedule, and project constraints.
Conduct job site visits and inspections as needed.
Assist with training and mentoring new team members.
Support continuous improvement initiatives by recommending enhancements to design processes, tools, and best practices.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining exceptional quality and customer service standards.

What You Bring
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 4 years of drafting or design experience within the construction, building materials, structural design, or related industry.
Strong ability to read, interpret, and analyze architectural and construction blueprints.
Excellent verbal, written, and customer communication skills.
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with residential roof and floor system design.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
Experience with MiTek software is a plus.
Knowledge of residential construction methods, building codes, and structural design principles.

Work in both office and field environments, including outdoor locations with varying weather conditions.
