Senior/Staff Software Engineer, CAD Integrations
Description
About Quilter
At Quilter, we are helping electrical engineers save time and accomplish more by automating the tedious and time-consuming task of designing printed circuit boards (PCBs). Our small team is composed of experts in electrical engineering, electromagnetic simulation, ML/AI, and high-performance computing (HPC). We are inventing and leveraging novel techniques to solve the decades-old problem of automating circuit board design where today hundreds of billions of dollars are spent. We have raised $25 million in Series B funding from some of the very best and are charging full-speed toward our goal.
No matter where we come from, we're united by a common vision for the future and a core set of values we think will get us there:
Curiosity
Conviction
Rigor
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to own substantial improvements to Quilter’s CAD integrations. Our File I/O team connects Quilter with tools including Altium, KiCad, Cadence Allegro, and Siemens Xpedition. Your work will let customers bring more of their designs into Quilter and use the results in their existing CAD workflows.
Working primarily in Python, you’ll take integration features from investigation through production, building the parsers, exporters, and shared design models they need. You’ll collaborate with teams across Quilter and help shape our integration architecture and engineering practices.
You’ll help shape how we use LLMs and agentic workflows to solve integration problems—from operating CAD tools and generating controlled test designs to investigating undocumented formats. You’ll have room to experiment with models, tools, and orchestration, and turn promising approaches into reliable systems the team can use.
What You’ll Do
Lead integration design and delivery. Extend Python parsers and exporters, support richer design information, and maintain compatibility with supported CAD tools. Make architectural tradeoffs independently and mentor teammates through reviews and difficult investigations.
Reverse-engineer proprietary formats. Combine native CAD tools, APIs, and controlled experiments with LLM-driven investigation workflows to understand binary and text-based formats and how they represent engineering intent.
Evolve shared models. Partner with other teams on shared representations of boards, schematics, and design constraints, preserving the information downstream systems need.
Make correctness testable. Build fixtures, semantic checks, round-trip tests, and native-tool validation that catch lost information and invalid output and provide reliable signals for automated evaluation.
Build agentic harnesses and workflows. Connect models to CAD automation and inspection tools; design iterative investigation and feedback loops. Use evals to guide model and workflow choices and improve reliability, speed, and cost.
Own changes in production. Scope useful deliveries, validate realistic designs, and turn failures into fixes, better diagnostics, and regression coverage.
What We’re Looking For
Deep production Python experience. This is our primary language, and you should be comfortable designing, debugging, testing, and maintaining substantial Python codebases.
Experience solving difficult integration, systems, or data-representation problems with unfamiliar code and incomplete documentation. You can isolate causes and test hypotheses.
Sound judgment about data models, interfaces, and testing. You can define correct behavior and build checks that establish it.
Practical experience with LLMs and agentic workflows. You can reason about tool use, evaluate results, and iterate on the surrounding system.
Clear communication and strong ownership in a distributed team. You document findings and coordinate changes that affect other teams.
Nice to Have
These are useful backgrounds, not a checklist—we don’t expect any one candidate to bring all of them.
Familiarity with PCB design, electrical engineering, or EDA tools.
Experience with parsers, compilers, binary formats, serialization, geometry, or complex domain models.
Experience automating desktop applications, using vendor SDKs, or working with native libraries in C, C++, or Rust.
Experience building regression corpora, differential tests, fuzzing tools, or agent harnesses and evals.
What Success Looks Like
Customers can use more of their design features through Quilter’s import/export workflows, with design intent preserved and regression tests protecting that behavior. The models, tools, and documented findings built along the way make the next integration improvement easier to deliver.
Please note: We are an equal opportunity employer. At this time, we are focused on hiring primarily within the US, with occasional exception to accommodate exceptional talent.
