Staff Software Engineer, Infrastructure
Description
Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.
Google's Sellside Display and Video Ads platforms—including Google Ad Manager and AdSense—are the business generation engine for the open web, funding millions of news, media, and entertainment publishers worldwide.
Our team operates at the intersection of billions of daily browser environments and Google's low-latency C++ ad-serving stack. Over the past year, we have leveraged our footprint on millions of publisher sites to take on full-stack product and serving initiatives—meaning engineers on our team shape the entire lifecycle of an ad request from the browser and network edge all the way through our high queries per second (QPS) C++ backend ad-serving systems.
What we are building:
- First-Party Serving and Publisher Integrations.
- Next-Generation Ad Delivery to the Browser.
- Shared Client and Serving Platform Foundations.
Google Ads is at the forefront of AI innovation, applying cutting-edge machine learning and Generative AI models like Gemini to power a multi-billion dollar global business.
Our work directly impacts billions of users by protecting users from harm, improving ad quality, and optimizing campaigns for advertiser return-on-investment. We foster a culture of deep collaboration, partnering closely with teams like Google Research and DeepMind to solve complex challenges. Join us to work on state-of-the-art AI, take on problems at an unparalleled scale, and build the next generation of advertising technology.

- Lead end-to-end system design for complex, multi-quarter initiatives across browser runtimes and backend ad servers, balancing business generation, latency, and privacy.
- Act as a technical authority and team multiplier across engineering groups—influencing multi-year architectural roadmaps, system boundaries, and API contracts across client tagging, ad serving, and privacy infrastructure.
- Reduce complexity in critical codebases by designing clean abstractions, safe guardrails, and AI workflows that accelerate team velocity and reliability.
- Design rigorous A/B experiments and high-volume telemetry pipelines to validate performance, latency, and monetization across billions of daily impressions.
- Provide technical leadership to Cambridge-based engineers by breaking down complex problems, elevating design/code reviews, and coaching them into senior roles.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of software development experience in C++ or TypeScript/JavaScript.
- 3 years of experience with full stack development, across back-end such as Java, Python, Golang, C++ or equivalent codebases, and front-end experience including JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, CSS or equivalent.
- 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience spanning both high-throughput backend serving architectures in C++ (low-latency RPC services, caching) and modern web platform internals in TypeScript/JavaScript (browser security/privacy models, cross-origin iframes, HTTP/edge routing, emerging browser standards such as shared compression dictionaries)
- Experience with online controlled experimentation (A/B testing at scale), causal inference, and high-volume telemetry/data analysis.
- Experience in digital advertising, ad-serving infrastructure, or web platform engineering.
- Proven track record of designing, evolving, and operating large-scale, low-latency distributed backend systems.
- Ability to influence technical direction across organizational boundaries and partner effectively.
