Substitute School Nurse

Certification Requirement:

• You must possess a valid, current New Jersey Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license
• You must apply online for a substitute certificate through the New Jersey Educator Certification System (NJEdCert) --> see below

Responsibilities:

• Facilitate all aspects of school nurse responsibilities
• Attend field trips to provide medical coverage as needed
• Provide teachers with health information in regard to specific students
• Keep up-to-date health records for all students and record administration of first aid
• As authorized, administer medication to students
• Provide first aid or other medical assistance

HOW TO BECOME A SUBSTITUTE NURSE IN NEW PROVIDENCE!

1. Apply Online:
2. Complete the Criminal History Background Check:

• Pay administrative fee(s) for the criminal history background clearance
• Print out the IdentoGO New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form from the NJ Department of Education (NJDOE) Office of Student Protection webpage
• Go to the Identogo Website to schedule an appointment and pay fingerprinting FEE.

• Attend the scheduled appointment time and get fingerprinted.
• You must bring the following to your fingerprinting appointment:
  • Photo ID (Foreign passports will no longer be accepted as proof of identification)

3. Apply Online for your Substitute Certificate at

• Please choose:
  • Category - Credential
  • Type - Substitute
  • Title - Substitute Nurse
• Pay $125 online which covers your substitute certification for five years
• Complete the Substitute Oath of Allegiance at this time
• Print out the receipt showing that you have applied online for your Substitute Certificate--this will include your tracking number, which is important.

4. Make an Appointment with Amanda Srey at the New Providence BOE: [email protected] or 908-464-9050 ext. 4224

• Bring the Following Items with you to your Appointment with Amanda Srey
  • Social Security Card
  • Valid NJ Driver's License
  • Valid Passport, if you have one
  • Documentation of a negative Mantoux (TB) test; the Mantoux test result must be from the past six months

Finally, after the paperwork and certification process is complete, you will be interviewed, trained, board-approved, and ready to start subbing!
