Position Overview
KWC’s Business Service Group is seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead and deliver sophisticated tax compliance and planning services for high-net-worth individuals, families, and closely held business owners.
This position is primarily focused on complex individual income tax compliance and planning, including the review and management of Forms 1040 involving substantial investment income, pass-through entities, multistate activity, and other complex tax matters. The Tax Manager will serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients, provide proactive planning throughout the year, and coordinate the various tax matters affecting an individual or family’s overall financial picture.
The ideal candidate has deep experience with complex Forms 1040 and understands how individual tax issues intersect with partnerships, S corporations, trusts, estates, gifts, and closely held investments. Experience with fiduciary and transfer-tax matters is valuable, but the primary emphasis of this role is high-net-worth individual taxation.
The Tax Manager will plan, supervise, and complete multiple client engagements; deliver a finished and accurate work product for principal review; manage client communications; support engagement billing and profitability; and supervise, train, and mentor staff. This person will combine strong technical knowledge with sound judgment, critical thinking, accountability, and a client-focused mindset.
Responsibilities:
High-Net-Worth Tax Compliance and Planning
- Review and manage the preparation of complex federal and state individual income tax returns, with a strong emphasis on Forms 1040.
- Provide proactive tax planning for high-income individuals, families, business owners, executives, and investors.
- Analyze tax matters involving pass-through income, investment activity, capital gains, estimated tax payments, multistate filings, charitable giving, retirement planning, and other issues affecting high-net-worth taxpayers.
- Understand and evaluate how partnership, S corporation, trust, estate, and gift-tax matters affect an individual client’s overall tax position.
- Research, analyze, and clearly communicate complex federal and state tax issues.
- Monitor relevant tax-law developments, evaluate their effect on assigned clients, and communicate planning opportunities and compliance requirements.
- Produce accurate, complete, and well-organized work and perform an effective self-review before submitting work for principal review.
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned high-net-worth individuals and family groups.
- Develop a thorough understanding of each client’s income sources, investments, entities, family circumstances, and overall tax objectives.
- Anticipate client needs across the annual compliance cycle and identify planning matters before they become filing-season issues.
- Communicate technical tax matters in a clear, practical, and responsive manner.
- Coordinate with clients’ attorneys, investment advisers, family offices, and other professional advisers when appropriate.
- Prepare client correspondence and respond to questions and requests on a timely basis.
- Build client trust through sound judgment, responsiveness, discretion, and consistent follow-through.
Engagement and Team Leadership
- Plan, supervise, and complete multiple engagements while balancing larger, complex client relationships with smaller engagements and recurring compliance responsibilities.
- Manage work to established deadlines and budgets, documenting and addressing variances when necessary.
- Delegate work effectively and provide appropriate direction to staff, senior accountants, and supervisors.
- Review staff work, answer technical questions, and provide timely, constructive coaching.
- Identify training needs and contribute to the technical development of team members.
- Foster collaboration, celebrate team accomplishments, and support a positive and professional working environment.
- Participate in the operational activities of the firm and tax practice as assigned.
- Contribute to business development by cultivating referral sources, professional networks, and strategic relationships.
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or a related field.
- Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent designation.
- Five to seven or more years of relevant tax experience in public accounting or a professional tax environment.
