Project Engineer – Civil/Water Engineering
An exciting opportunity exists within Stantec’s Water practice for an experienced Project Manager/Engineer to join our team in Memphis, Tennessee.
This opportunity is well suited for someone looking for the next step in their career and the opportunity to take greater ownership of projects, as well as an experienced professional who wants to continue contributing their expertise while focusing on smaller, manageable projects and a more flexible work environment.
Rather than focusing exclusively on large, complex programs, this position provides the opportunity to lead and support small to mid-sized municipal water and wastewater projects, build meaningful client relationships, and work alongside Stantec’s established regional network of Water professionals.
You’ll have the opportunity to manage projects from beginning to end, including scope, schedules, budgets, technical delivery, and client communication, while having access to additional technical and project resources when needed.
Your Key Responsibilities
As a Project Manager/Engineer, you will help deliver successful municipal water and wastewater projects throughout Memphis and the surrounding region. Depending on your experience and career interests, responsibilities may include:
- Manage and take ownership of small to mid-sized water and wastewater projects, from initial scope through final delivery.
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, task orders, and deliverables.
- Serve as a trusted point of contact for clients and develop long-term relationships by understanding their infrastructure needs.
- Coordinate engineers, designers, technical specialists, and other disciplines to deliver practical, high-quality solutions.
- Provide technical leadership in areas such as water treatment, wastewater treatment, water distribution, collection systems, pump stations, and related municipal infrastructure.
- Prepare or review design calculations, technical reports, construction drawings, specifications, and other project deliverables.
- Manage project budgets, staffing needs, schedules, invoicing, and overall project performance.
- Work collaboratively with Stantec’s broader Water team, providing access to specialized expertise and resources when projects require additional support.
- Participate in proposals, interviews, and client-development activities at a level appropriate to your role, experience, and interests.
- Mentor and support developing engineers while sharing your technical and project-management experience.
- For professionals interested in growing their careers, take on increasing responsibility for project leadership, client relationships, and larger assignments over time.
- For seasoned professionals, apply your experience to focused project delivery, technical guidance, mentoring, and client support without the expectation that every assignment needs to be a large, complex project.
- Maintain Stantec’s standards for technical quality, client service, safety, and professional excellence.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- We’re looking for someone who enjoys delivering quality work, collaborating with clients and colleagues, and taking ownership of projects.
- The successful candidate will ideally bring:
- Experience with municipal water and/or wastewater projects.
- Project or task management experience with an interest in leading projects independently.
- Knowledge of water treatment, wastewater treatment, water distribution and/or wastewater collection systems.
- Ability to develop and manage scopes, budgets, schedules, and project deliverables.
- Strong communication and client-service skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with engineers, designers, technical specialists, clients, and regulatory agencies.
- Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, permitting requirements, and engineering standards.
- Strong technical writing, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining quality and responsiveness.
- A collaborative approach and willingness to mentor and share knowledge with other team members.
- Ability to travel as needed based on project and client requirements.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Water Resources, Biological Systems Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Progressive experience in water/wastewater engineering, project delivery, or project management.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure is preferred, particularly registration in Tennessee or the ability to obtain Tennessee registration through reciprocity.
- Previous project-management experience is preferred, but candidates who have successfully led significant project tasks and are ready to move into greater project ownership are encouraged to apply.
Why This Opportunity?
Ready to step up?
If you’ve been a technical lead, task manager, or supporting project manager and are ready to own projects, work directly with clients, and build your PM experience, this position provides that opportunity with support from an established Water team.
Looking for the right next chapter?
If you’ve spent years managing large projects, teams, or programs and want to continue applying that experience in a role with smaller projects, mentoring opportunities, meaningful client interaction, and greater flexibility, this role can offer a different kind of career opportunity.
Either way, you don’t have to build alone. You’ll be part of Stantec’s broader Water network with access to technical expertise and multidisciplinary resources while making a direct impact on water and wastewater infrastructure in the Memphis market.
