Software Engineer Intern - Summer 2027
Description
Standard Job Description
Lockheed Martin is leading the way in hypersonic missile development, and we want you to be a part of it! We are creating the first hypersonic boost/glide system for the US Army and Navy here on the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program, and our NGC-SW Integrated Product Team (IPT) is responsible for the algorithms and software that control it. Our group includes the Navigation, Guidance, and Control (NG&C or GN&C) subsystem, which flies the missile and glide body, and the embedded Flight Software (FSW) which hosts the NG&C algorithms and provides health, status, and sequencing for the entire system. Additionally, we develop and maintain the Flight Software testbeds (HILs or HWILs) which provide complete hardware integration testing with feedback and flight simulation to test the NG&C algorithms and flight software.
Lockheed Martin Space is seeking a Software Engineering Intern for a full-time summer position. In this role, you will support the software engineering lifecycle following the program Software Development Plan (SDP) to include requirements analysis, object-oriented analysis & design, code reviews, unit testing, integration support, and assistance with formal test/delivery activities. This internship is designed for undergraduate students seeking hands-on experience with real-world aerospace software development on cutting-edge hypersonic systems.
The successful candidate will have experience and/or knowledge of languages such as C, C++, or Python. Must be currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (typically rising sophomore, junior, or senior standing). US Citizenship is required for this position due to program requirements; eligibility for a government security clearance is necessary, and this role is located at a facility with special access requirements.
This is a full-time summer internship (typically 10–12 weeks), with mentorship from experienced NG&C and FSW engineers, exposure to hardware-in-the-loop testing environments, and the opportunity to contribute to critical algorithms and flight software for the next-generation boost/glide system.
Performs assignments in technical/engineering organizations (e.g., Electronics Engineering, Software Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering) during vacations and short-term breaks from college attendance while enrolled in an accredited degree program.
Basic Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, with rising sophomore, junior, or senior standing preferred
- Demonstrated experience and/or coursework proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, or Python
- Foundational understanding of software development principles, including object-oriented design, version control (e.g., Git), and basic debugging/test workflows
Desired Skills
- Coursework or project experience with embedded systems, real-time software, or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL/HWIL) testing environments
- Familiarity with version control, build systems, or unit testing frameworks
